49ers QB Smith wants to take more shots downfield

Is the finger pointing about to commence in San Francisco? QB Alex Smith noted that the team did not take shots down the field against the Seahawks and also complained about the speed to which the plays are coming in, according to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.
The 49ers were a huge fantasy disappointment on Sunday, and this certainly does not help. RB Frank Gore could not get running and the team could not punch the ball in from the red zone. WR Michael Crabtree had only two receptions, which prompted one of my bosses to text me last night to ask where he was.
And then there was Smith.
I always advocate against overreacting in most instances. Gore is going to be fine. The 49ers had to abandon the run because the team fell behind. Crabtree needs to take some time to get into a rhythm after missing all of those preseason games.
But how many years of his failures need to pass before enough is enough with Smith? At this point, he is as damaging to his team as JaMarcus Russell was to Oakland. I had once viewed Smith as a possible matchup-based starter, but that notion is gone. At this point, you just hope he does not drag Gore, Crabtree and Vernon Davis down with him.
