This Favre situation can’t end well, can it?

Announcers used to rave about how much fun Brett Favre used to have on the football field. Did anybody see that joy in his eyes on Thursday night? Favre sure looked like he would have rather been on a porch in Mississippi on Thursday night, instead of floundering against the Saints. You could almost see Jared Allen saying to himself, “I flew down to Mississippi to bring you back for this?”

While I temporarily relish in benching Favre for the evening, I will paraphrase the Wolf in Pulp Fiction who said, “let’s not start … uh … celebrating just yet.” Because there is a growing concern that Favre might not be fantasy relevant at all this season.

I joked when I picked Favre and Ben Roethlisberger in back-to-back rounds during my fantasy draft on Monday night that I just needed Favre for five weeks. That seems awfully generous right now. Not to turn this into another episode of Overreaction Theater, but that was not a good performance Thursday night. I would almost rather start the suspended Roethlisberger next week.

Thankfully I snagged Matthew Stafford very late with an eye on starting him this week, but turns out he could be my starting quarterback for the next month.

Favre supporters could point out that he was not so sharp in Week 1 last year, but that was because Adrian Peterson was going crazy. I have feared that Favre was not going to bring it this year. And at least for one week, those fears are real.
