Before Brett Favre joined the Vikings on the practice field on Wednesday morning, he held a meeting with his teammates, presumably to clear the air on his return.
While we wait for coach Brad Childress (and hopefully Favre) to speak after practice, the audio of an interview with Bernard Berrian on SIRIUS NFL Radio just landed on the news desk.
Here are a few cuts of what Berrian had to say with hosts Adam Schein and Rich Gannon:
On what Favre had to say to the team: “Pretty much the same thing he said last year. He just wanted to reiterate to the team that he’s here to try to help us win a championship, and the decision to come back or not come back had nothing to do with training camp or money and that it was just a long process, a long decision. When you get to that age you’ve got a lot of things, a lot of variables, to think about and those two weren’t one of them. He just wanted to make sure the team knows that and that he’s here and what kind of guy he is.”
On the variables involved in his decision to return: “I think age and getting through a whole season was the main thing. … No, it’s not the ankle. It’s just turning 41, I think, is the biggest thing. Getting to that age and being able to sustain throughout a whole season I think was the biggest thing he was contemplating on. When he was able to see that, and get in shape, and find out that he was going to be able to do it then, that’s when he said, ‘I’ll give it the go-ahead and go.’”
On Tarvaris Jackson: “Tarvaris knows the situation. He knew it before coming in. He knew what was going to be happening when we got around this time anyway, so he was prepared for it again. … That was one of the things that was brought up in the meeting when Brett spoke. He talked about talking to Sage [Rosenfels] and Tarvaris beforehand, before anyone else. So, he expressed their feelings so that they still have that close relationship.”
On the trip by Ryan Longwell, Steve Hutchinson and Jared Allen to visit Favre: “I think that was just for show. … The three teammates going out there — Jared, Longwell and Hutch going out there — had no influence on Brett coming back this season.”
On the mood of the Vikings: “We’re all excited. We’re definitely all excited. We all know what Brett’s capable of doing. That’s what brings the excitement around. We saw what happened last year and we can’t rest on what happened last year. We’ve got to take what happened last year to the next level and that’s the reason why he’s back.”
