WR Wes Welker has been taking positive steps in his recovery from knee surgery, but that doesn’t include playing in Thursday night’s preseason opener against the Saints.
Welker was one of 12 Patriots ruled inactive for the game. It’s fully expected the Patriots will be cautious with Welker, so we’ll have to wait a little longer to see him in game action for the first time.
Nick Kaczur, who had been working at left guard in the absence of Logan Mankins, is also inactive. Kaczur has been battling a back injury. Most reports had Dan Connolly working at left guard in recent practices, so he’s a good bet to fill in tonight.
The rest of the Patriots inactives: Matthew Slater, Leigh Bodden, Bret Lockett, Terrence Johnson, Gary Guyton, Torry Holt, Ty Warren, Jermaine Cunningham, Ron Brace and Josh Barrett.
