Pats coach Belichick noncommittal on Welker’s status

Patriots coach Bill Belichick would neither confirm nor deny Wednesday that WR Wes Welker will see the field in the preseason opener against the Saints.

“We’ll see how it goes here yesterday, and then today, and make a decision on that,” Belichick said when asked if Welker can play Thursday. “I don’t know. I’m not saying he will. I’m not saying he won’t. We’ll evaluate it and see.”

So he’s saying there’s a chance …

Welker took another step in his recovery from offseason knee surgery when he participated in a joint practice session with the Saints on Tuesday, and he came up with the play of the day (courtesy of’s Erik Scalavino) during Wednesday’s session.
