Panthers’ Jarrett still in the hunt for starting job

Pat Kirwan checked in from Carolina Panthers camp on Monday, and offered up food for thought on the evolving wide receiver competition behind the rehabbing Steve Smith.

For starters, Kirwan reports Smith is “very optimistic” about returning for the season-opener, the latest positive report in his comeback from a broken arm. But the bigger story is who will line up opposite Smith in what feels like a never-ending quest to find a productive No. 2 receiver in Carolina.

Several young receivers are getting looks, and we’ve been hearing rookie Brandon LeFell mentioned as theĀ favorite to beat out fellow rookie Armanti Edwards and Dwayne Jarrett. While Kirwan offers that LeFell could very well win the job, he says not to count out Jarrett, who has gained confidence after three unproductive seasons and isĀ “still in the hunt” to be the starter.
