Best could top Lions’ depth chart at RB

Who is the going to be the top fantasy rookie running back this season? The smart money has long been on Chargers RB Ryan Mathews. But it looks like Lions RB Jahvid Best is going to make a case for himself.

Or at least he looks like he is going to get the chance to make his mark. One of the knocks against Best was that he was likely to lose carries to Kevin Smith. That might not be entirely accurate.

Lions offensive coordinator Scott Linehan told the Detroit Free Press that he would like to settle into one ‘go-to’ guy.

“You like to have a guy that you’re going to that you’re giving a bulk of the carries to,” Linehan said. “A lot of things factor into that. That’s down the road. … Certainly you want to have a go-to guy, but you need to be able to have other guys and have good depth there to be an effective run team.”

Best is expected to be the starter in Detroit, or maybe that is the fantasy enthusiast in me rooting for that. Linehan is not going to make the mistake of giving Best the job outright because, well, that is what coaches do.

Coach Jim Schwartz┬ápraised Best’s explosiveness, too, but again, wanted to temper his enthusiasm. He quickly pointed out that Best is only a rookie and he did not want to get ahead of himself.

Let the coaches talk in coach-speak. Reading between the lines, you have to like Best to be the starter in Detroit. And with what should be the most solvent Lions offense since 1997, there is reason to be excited about Best and some of the other skill players in Detroit.
