The Saints will begin the process of defending their title when they take the field for the first time at training camp on Friday, but they will do so with several players watching from the sidelines.
Saints GM Mickey Loomis opened an introductory news conference on Thursday by announcing FS Darren Sharper, WR Robert Meachem, WR Marques Colston and LB Clint Ingram will be put on the active Physically Unable To Perform (PUP) list.
A player on the active PUP list counts against the 80-man roster, and he is eligible to return to practice any time. Players on the active PUP are allowed to rehab and take part in meetings.
Sharper was expected to be ready for camp after undergoing microfracture surgery early in the offseason. Loomis added he expects all four players to be activated in the next couple of weeks.
