Gates ‘better’ but still unsure about training camp

With just six teams league-wide holding minicamps this weekend, there’s not an overwhelming amount of news to pass along.
That said, one notable update did came out of San Diego, where TE Antonio Gates told The San Diego Union-Tribune he is feeling “much better” as he continues to rehab from plantar fasciitis. Still, Gates said he won’t know for sure whether he’ll be ready for training camp until he gives it a true test.
“Once I start back running I will kind of get an idea,” Gates told the paper. “Then I can determine whether the foot is healthy enough.”
The Chargers have reason to be cautious with Gates, who recently echoed that strategy, while saying the foot was “never was a major problem,” according to the North County Times.
There are still several months to go before meaningful games are played in a season that’s key for Gates, who is entering the final year of the six-year extension that he signed in 2005.
