Peterson has unusual reason to miss minicamp

We have all had some inventive excuses to get out of work. (One of my favorites came during my time at the Orange County Register when a news assistant called to say that he could not make it to work because he lost his wallet and was unable to purchase gas for his car. That guy is now a researcher for NFL Network.)

But nobody can touch Adrian Peterson when it comes to the mother of all excuses. Peterson will miss the Vikings’ two minicamp practices on Saturday because — wait for it — he will be participating in the fourth annual Adrian Peterson Day in Palestine, Texas, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Peterson’s aunt, Carol Pegues, confirmed to the Star Tribune that Peterson will be in Texas for a parade and party that drew more than 2,000 people last year. Or, what is the typical attendance at Jaguars’ home games.

So give that excuse a try the next time you are calling in sick. “Can’t make it into work today, boss … they are having a parade in my honor back in my home town.”

If your boss is a compassionate person, you should be given the day off just for your ingenuity. The question is, will Vikings coach Brad Childress do the same?
