It hasn’t been that long since we discussed the crowded backfield situation — along with the possibility of adding Brian Westbrook — in Washington. Now comes word that a pecking order has been established among Clinton Portis, Larry Johnson, Willie Parker and the almost forgotten Ryan Torain.
While coach Mike Shanahan has been reluctant to name starters in the spirit of competition, offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan has given the nod to Portis, who will continue running with the starters when training camp begins, per Jason Reid of The Washington Post.
While the Redskins sort out who carries the ball when, Rich Tandler of Comcast Sports Washington passes along that, according to a few observers, Parker appears to lack burst.
With Mike Shanahan participating in some media recruiting of Westbrook on Wednesday, the possibility remains that things could become a bit more crowded soon.
