First, the New York Jets signed on to be the subject of HBO’s “Hard Knocks.” Now, a few members of the team — led by coach Rex Ryan — are taking part in their own version of “The Biggest Loser.”
Ryan, who underwent a lap-band procedure in March, revealed Monday he’ll take part in a weight-loss competition with DT Kris Jenkins and OT Damien Woody. The contest was set in motion at a weigh-in Monday morning, and will run right up until the team begins training camp on July 30.
Whoever loses the most weight over those 11 weeks will receive a prize he can donate to the charity of his choice.
A great take, per the team’s site, on the competition from Woody:
“I would say something like ‘Get your popcorn ready,’ but we don’t need to be eating popcorn for this,” said Woody. “I don’t have any trash-talking right now. This is an idea that Coach Ryan thought about and it’s a great idea. We’re going to see who the best man is.”
Ryan told the Jets’ official site he has lost “37, 38” pounds since he had his procedure and is starting off at 311 pounds. Jenkins, recovering from a torn ACL, is listed at 6-foot-4, 360 pounds. Who knows how accurate that is. Woody is listed at 6-3, 330.
