New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton made an appearance on NFL Network’s Total Access on Saturday to discuss the team’s fifth-round draft pick as it was being announced at Radio City Music Hall in New York City (They chose C Matt Tennant, from Boston College).
Payton discussed the selection of Tennant, as well as first-round choice, CB Patrick Robinson. He also enlightened the audience on what it’s like to wait for 31 other teams to make selections (stay out of the food line!) and explained how his team is gearing up for a repeat in 2010:
“I think it starts with the leadership in the locker room. We backed our offseason program up a little bit. We’ll lean heavily on our leaders and I think that the accomplishment of a year ago is one thing in this league you move on (from)very quickly. You’re judged just how you play each and every year, so we put that kind of challenge in front of our team a week and a half ago when we started our offseason and I’m anxious to see how they respond. I think they’ll handle it very well.”
