Taking Saffold shows Rams plan to protect Bradford

If you’re going to draft a franchise quarterback in Sam Bradford, you’ve got to protect him, right? The Rams used the first pick of the second round (33rd overall) on Indiana guard/tackle Rodger Saffold. Saffold will pair with last year’s first-round pick Jason Smith to eventually form bookend tackles.
This, folks, is having a plan.
The Rams could have gone a lot of different directions — wide receiver, defensive tackle, outside linebacker — but they stuck to their board and made a pick for a very athletic lineman who can develop. Saffold is going to be pushed to get on the field quickly because Bradford will be pushed to start in Week 1.
