NEW YORK — The lineage of tight ends from the University of Miami is quite impressive. One of the most accomplished among that group is current Saints tight end Jeremy Shockey.
In order to try and keep the tradition going, Shockey made sure to help out the newest Hurricanes tight end during the pre-draft process, Jimmy Graham.
As it turns out, that mentor-ship will continue into the pros. The Saints selected Graham with the 95th overall pick.
A former basketball player, Graham didn’t start playing football until his last season at Miami. He credited Shockey with helping him get ready for his workouts in an interview at the NFL Scouting Combine.
By having a solid showing at the Senior Bowl, and posting some good numbers at the combine and his pro day, Graham worked his way all the way into the third round, and now gets the pleasure of playing with his tutor from the “U”.
