Spiller has draft day strategy

NEW YORK — The one moment of the NFL Draft C.J. Spiller is most looking forward to is the moment an NFL team calls to say they want him to be a part of their organization. He also has a plan to make sure that moment isn’t spoiled.

The deft strategy is that Spiller has a phone number that only NFL teams have in their possession. No one else has his number. Not even mom. So when he’s in the green room and the phone does go off, it won’t be a text from a friend. There’s no mistaking it will be an NFL team.

Spiller, who says he visited the Bills, Broncos, Bengals and Bucs, and only heard from the Seahawks to get the secret number, is in a similar position as several of the other prospects in having no concrete indication of where he’ll be drafted (incidentally, all four of our mock drafters put Spiller in the top 14, with Charles Davis and Pat Kirwan eyeing the Browns).

“All of the visits I went on, the teams seemed like they were interested,” Spiller said. “It didn’t seem like they brought me in just to bring me in. But, we’ll see tomorrow.

“I’m not in the dark. Not anxious. Just excited.”
