The past week has brought an increase in trade chatter surrounding outspoken Giants DE Osi Umenyiora.
The latest comes from the New York Daily News‘ Ralph Vacchiano, who wrote Tuesday that the Giants are indeed “not actively shopping” Umenyiora, according to two sources. Of course, we know the phrase “not actively shopping” also can mean “still listening to offers” with two days to go before the draft.
Vacchiano also noted that as of two weeks ago, the Giants weren’t entertaining offers and that two teams — the Panthers and Rams — would “love” to make a deal for the two-time Pro Bowl pick.
Vacchiano’s report was preceded Monday by a story from The Star-Ledger‘s Mike Garafolo, who noted that the Panthers and Rams were the most interested in dealing for Umenyiora, while also throwing the Dolphins in the mix.
The sudden increase in chatter makes this situation feel like a draft-day trade waiting to happen. If the Giants select one of the two highly rated pass rushers with the No. 15 overall pick — Derrick Morgan or Jason Pierre-Paul — we might not have to wait long to find out Umenyiora’s fate.
Two of our mock drafts present differing opinions on what the Giants might do. Charles Davis has them selecting DT Dan Williams after both Morgan and Pierre-Paul come off the board. Bucky Brooks sees them passing on both rushers for LB Sergio Kindle.
