It’s not difficult to see that Darren Sharper has “future television football analyst” written all over him. He’s always a solid addition on NFL Total Access when he makes a cameo to our Los Angeles studios. For now, though, he’s still on the other side of the microphone for most of the year.
Sharper, an unrestricted free agent after a season (and a ring, thank you very much) with the Saints, was open Tuesday about a possible return to ‘Nawlins. With 13 seasons and a Super Bowl win on his resume, Sharper is doing this offseason what he did last offseason — taking a methodical approach to what team is the best fit.
Rapping with Sharper for a few minutes following his live chat with fans Wednesday, the parameters for his next stop follow what you’d expect out of a veteran free agent. The ideal situation is a veteran, playoff-caliber team with a defensive scheme that fits his skills and a need at free safety. No surprises there. Finding out more about the procedure on his left knee, without giving away details, it was as minor as has been reported. I don’t see it being an issue once he’s able to show teams he’s recovered.
Throwing out an educated guess, I would put the Jets, Redskins, Saints and Eagles on the short list to land Sharper. One could also make arguments for the Chargers and Cowboys. Expect the market for Sharper to solidify following the draft.
