History suggests pre-draft visits by prospects can mean everything, and nothing. So put as much stock as you want to in this post.
Oklahoma DT Gerald McCoy told NFL Total Access during a visit Wednesday he has visits scheduled with each of the teams holding a top-four pick in the draft. He’s already visited the Lions and Redskins, and will visit the Rams and Buccaneers.
From there, we offer educated speculation.
Draft analyst Mike Mayock continues to rank McCoy as his top-rated prospect. Our football minds vary somewhat on where he’ll go, as Charles Davis and Bucky Brooks slot him going to the Buccaneers at No. 3, while Pat Kirwan sees him sliding to the Seahawks at No. 6.
McCoy, who says he’s best suited to play the inside three-technique in a 4-3 scheme but can also play a five-technique as a defensive end in a 3-4, hopes to go in the top three.
We’ll be discussing the draft value of McCoy, Ndamukong Suh and Russell Okung continuously over the next two weeks, but interpreting the intentions of the teams at the top is difficult. Plus, with trade talk like this from the Detroit Free Press that the Lions would like out of the No. 2 slot, the reality is the whole conversation is rendered moot with one trade.
