Nothing like a little bit of Rex Ryan to start the day.
The NFL newsroom was treated to the Jets news conference Thursday to formally announce that the team will be featured on HBO’s “Hard Knocks” this summer.
Ryan, who was a coach in Baltimore when the Ravens were featured on the original series in 2001, said because of that experience, he isn’t worried about the possible distraction.
“No, just the opposite,” Ryan said. “When it’s football business, it’s football business. When it’s time for work, our guys know the difference. … We do have quite a few colorful personalities. I think it’s going to be a good thing. It’s part of the story, it’s part of who the New York Jets are. Let their personalities shine. It’s going to be encouraged; not the other way [around].”
NFL Films president Steve Sabol immediately jumped in with a story about how when he covered Vince Lombardi and the Packers in training camp, the legendary coach instructed the crews to set up cameras and always look like they were filming. Lombardi’s premise was that the players didn’t know the difference and would practice harder if they believed they were on camera.
“Me and Lombardi are pretty similar, I think,” Ryan quipped.
