Now, the stage is (maybe) set in Arizona — Matt Leinart or Derek Anderson? It’s Hot Stove NFL in March.
The latest out of Cardinals Camp from today’s conference call with the media is coach Ken Whisenhunt’s comments that Leinart has “earned the right to be ‘The Guy.’” In a similar vein, Anderson told reporters it’s “understood” he’s coming in as the No. 2 to push Leinart.
But NFL Network analysts Jamie Dukes and Rod Woodson are in agreement that it’s Anderson who will ultimately win the job.
“I believe Whisenhunt will give Leinart every opportunity to win the starting job,” Woodson said. “But you brought D.A. in for a reason. … At the end of the day, they’ll have an open competition going into training camp. But I believe Leinart will be the starter when the season starts, but somewhere along the line this sesaon D.A. gets a shot and doesn’t let it go.”
Meanwhile, NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora added an interesting twist by reporting the Cardinals might not be done and could add another veteran quarterback to round out the competition.
