Burmeister: Okung to Lions ‘makes perfect sense’

Recent rumblings suggest Oklahoma State LT Russell Okung is on the Lions’ radar with the No. 2 pick in the draft. While Okung took part in his pro day on Thursday, his bearing on how the top of the draft will unfold was a topic of discussion as Path to the Draft host Paul Burmeister chatted live with fans on NFL.com.
“It’s been just a given in draft conversations that Detroit will take [Gerald] McCoy or [Ndamukong] Suh, but given the investment they’ve made in Matt Stafford, and the incredibly high rankings of [Russell] Okung … why not the left tackle?” suggested Burmeister. “I think it’d make perfect sense.”
Burmeister discussed why the status of Okung — who also happens to be Mike Mayock’s top-ranked OT — is so clear-cut.
“Okung’s athletic ability and measurables are better than [Bryan] Bulaga’s, and his four years of tape at Oklahoma State are strong, too,” said Burmeister. “When you combine athleticism plus production, his upside is thought to be the clear cut, best in this class.”
