It’s one name in a lengthy list of transactions on Friday, but worth noting. On the same day the Eagles agreed to terms with FB Leonard Weaver and cut ties with LB Will Witherspoon, the team also officially released RB Brian Westbrook.
The Eagles had already announced their intentions, but now it’s official.
Westbrook now joins a long list of veteran running backs on the free-agent market, a group that includes Thomas Jones, LaDainian Tomlinson, Larry Johnson, Willie Parker and Jamal Lewis, among others. It’s a crowded field.
Westbrook, who is on the record that he wants to play after two concussions last season, said during a radio interview late last month “three or four” teams had called after the Eagles announced their intentions. NFL Network insider Michael Lombardi noted Friday on NFL Total Access one of those teams is the Washington Redskins.
NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora wasn’t alone in suggesting Jones — who the Jets would like to bring back at a lesser price — would be the first of the group to be signed. He noted the Kansas City Chiefs are also in the mix for Jones.
