Report: Pennington nearing return to Dolphins

Chad Pennington is nearing a return to the Miami Dolphins. The Palm Beach Post reports the Dolphins are expected to re-sign the veteran quarterback, citing a league source.

Pennington is set to become an unrestricted free agent at Midnight Friday, but “barring something crazy,” according to the source, he’ll be back in Miami.

With Chad Henne entrenched as the starter, Pennington would return to the Dolphins in the role of mentor and veteran backup. His season — and his starting role — were lost when he suffered a season-ending right shoulder injury in Week 3. He has since had his third surgery on the shoulder and is still recovering.
