The Redskins have released RBs Ladell Betts and Rock Cartwright and G Randy Thomas, according to league sources.
Betts had a 1,000-yard season under former coach Joe Gibbs, but he has suffered from health issues in recent years. Cartwright provided veteran depth in the backfield and was the team’s primary kick returner, having spent all eight of his NFL seasons in Washington.
Thomas had been the longtime starter on the right side for the Redskins. His 2009 season was cut short because of a torn triceps injury in Week 2, one of several serious injuries he suffered during the last few seasons.
One player who’s staying with the Redskins is C Casey Rabach, who has the basis of a new deal in place, according to a league source. Rabach, who was set to hit the free-agent market at midnight, is expected to sign the deal shortly.
