Saints want to work out contract extension for Brees

Tom Condon might be the busiest agent in the NFL this offseason.
The Saints want to be proactive and reward QB Drew Brees with a contract extension, NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi reported Wednesday. That news came one day after Colts owner Jim Irsay said he would give Peyton Manning, Brees’ Super Bowl XLIV counterpart, the biggest contract in the league this offseason.
Condon represents both Brees and Manning.
Brees’ contract expires in 2010. However, Lombardi said that Brees has exceeded the Saints’ expectations ever since signing a six-year, $60 million contract in 2006, so the team plans to meet with Condon during the offseason and work out a new deal.
Brees has led the Saints to their first Super Bowl appearance. He also has thrown for at least 4,300 yards in each of his four seasons in New Orleans.
Lombardi noted that the Saints likely will want to sign Brees before the Colts strike their deal with Manning. That way, Brees will be under contract before the salary bar for quarterbacks is raised.
Manning signed a signed a seven-year, $99.2 million deal with the Colts in 2004.
