FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Following every practice at the Pro Bowl, the AFC and NFC teams gather in a huddle for some final words before they’re engulfed by quote-seeking media. Usually, you can get a pretty good idea of what they’re talking about.
When the NFC team gathered around coach Wade Phillips to end Friday’s session, the Dallas coach tried to break the huddle with this: “One, two, three … Go Cowboys!”
It drew some laughs from DeMarcus Ware and the other seven Cowboys on the NFC roster. Not so much from the rest of the guys. As Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams explained it, the players challenged Phillips to go with something more creative than his customary “go team.”
“I don’t know what that was about,” Williams said. “He’s been breaking it down with ‘team’ all week, and we said, ‘C’mon, you gotta come up with something new coach. You just got an extension, we just had a great practice, and there’s just a lot of things that go into something you could say other than team.’ He was like, ‘OK, I got something.’ … That’s how he does it.”
