The Eagles have granted the Browns permission to interview Tom Heckert for their vacant general manager job, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.
Heckert has a strong track record as the Eagles’ GM and is well versed in the West Coast system that new Browns president Mike Holmgren will install in Cleveland.
Heckert and former Seahawks vice president of football operations Randy Mueller are favorites to land the position. Mueller is currently a senior executive with the Chargers following stints as GM of the Saints and Dolphins.
The Browns could install a GM by next week, according to a league source, and Holmgren also is very likely to fire coach Eric Mangini as he begins sweeping changes throughout the organization.
UPDATE: Holmgren confirmed in his first news conference as the Browns’ president that Heckert will interview with the team Wednesday.
