Panthers coach John Fox said following Sunday’s rout of the Giants that WR Steve Smith sustained a broken left arm. If there was any doubt, Smith said during his postgame comments the injury will keep him out of the season finale against the Saints.
Smith was injured during a 27-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter, and said he knew immediately he was hurt.
“After I caught the ball, he hit me and I staggered into the end zone,” Smith said. “I got tackled again, and when I got up I could feel it was kind of heavy and it was grinding. So I knew immediately.”
Fox said Smith will have surgery on Monday.
Smith finished the game with five catches for 60 yards, and for the season had 65 catches for 982 yards and seven touchdowns
