Smith OK to punt, so Redskins release Paulescu

Redskins coach Jim Zorn said he would wait until Saturday to decide on a punter. Judging by the team’s latest move, that decision has been made.

The Redskins announced that they have released Sam Paulescu, meaning Hunter Smith is healthy enough to punt Sunday against the Broncos.

Smith was limited in practice Friday because of a lingering right groin injury and was listed as questionable on the Redskins’ injury report. Smith has missed three games, including last weekend’s loss to the Falcons, in which Paulescu made his Redskins debut. The third-year pro averaged 50 yards on three punts.

The Redskins signed rookie safety Lendy Holmes from their practice squad to fill the open roster spot. Holmes gives Washington depth in the secondary after the team lost safety Chris Horton to a season-ending toe injury.
