Is that Alex Smith … or Joe Montana?

It looks like we might have a new starting quarterback in San Francisco.

QB Alex Smith replaced starter Shaun Hill at the start of the second half and has thrown for 174 yards and three touchdowns in Houston. All three of his scores have gone to TE Vernon Davis.

Despite his success, I’m really hesitant to recommend Smith off the waiver wire.

The former No. 1 overall pick has shown flashes of potential in the post, only to disappoint and post inconsistent numbers. If he does in fact start next week, it would be on the road against the much more formidable Colts defense.

Smith has been a stud today, I’m just not drinking the Kool-Aid just yet.
