Keep an eye on Matt Jones

Free agent wide receiver Matt Jones was not signed by the Titans this week, but considering how late in the preseason it was, the fact the team was playing that night — and that signing Jones then would have hurt their roster options that night — and the fact they were already facing cuts, that’s not a surprise.

Front office moves make little economic cents

Each year the Labor Day weekend serves as D-Day in the NFL. It is a time when NFL players participate in their own game of “Survivor” and believe me, no one wants to leave the Island.

Saints cut Harrington, keep Brunell as backup QB

The Saints have cut former Lions first-round draft pick Joey Harrington, meaning Mark Brunell will be the backup QB.

Redskins to sign QB Daniel to practice squad

Contrary to a published report, the Washington Redskins do plan to sign QB Chase Daniel to the practice squad.

‘Skins put Brennan on IR; Daniel to practice squad

Dolphins cut five, placed Roth on non-football IR

Among the moves made by the Dolphins today was placing OLB Matt Roth on the non-football injury list. Roth is still recovering from a groin injury that kept him out of the entire preseason.

Giants cut Super Bowl hero Tyree

Super Bowl XLII hero David Tyree had hoped to make a triumphant return to the Giants, one year after suffering a season-ending knee injury. Yet nagging injuries and an abundance of younger competition in training camp led to Tyree being waived today.

Calling out to Steeler Nation

I’ve got to come up with a list of the 20 best Steelers of all-time. Show me yours, and, come Thursday, I’ll show you mine.

Here’s what I’m hearing early on cut day …

Here is what I’ve heard so far this morning (at least its morning in LA where we are for the NFL Network cutdown show) …

Bucs sticking with four QBs

With trade options for QB Luke McCown not materializing, the Buccaneers will keep four quarterbacks on their 53-man roster, according to a league source. That is unless the Bucs make a late, surprise move for a QB, which appears highly unlikely.

Bills cut veteran RB Rhodes

In yet another offensive shakeup for the Buffalo Bills, veteran running back Dominic Rhodes was cut Saturday as the team trimmed the roster to 53, according to a source with knowledge of the move.

Rams’ Carriker out for season with shoulder injury

Adam Carriker made his preseason debut for the Rams on Thursday, but it will be his last game action of the season. The Rams will put Carriker on season-ending injured reserve with a right shoulder ailment that will require surgery, a league source told NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora.

Who did the Steelers cut? It’s a secret

The Steelers say they’re down to the 53-player roster limit, but they won’t say who they cut until Saturday. The reason? Coach Mike Tomlin doesn’t want other teams to have a competitive advantage by knowing who is available before they make their cuts.

Cards cut player vicitimized on Super Bowl-winning TD

The player victimized on Santonio Holmes’ Super Bowl XLIII-winning touchdown catch — safety Aaron Francisco — was one of 21 players released by the Cardinals as the team trimmed its roster to the mandatory 53-man limit.

Chiefs release veteran OL McIntosh, Ghiaciuc

Damion McIntosh, the Chiefs’ starting right tackle last season, now is looking for a job after the team released him following a bad preseason. The Chiefs also cut Eric Ghiaciuc, who signed with the team in April after being the Bengals’ starting center for three seasons.
