GM: Bucs won’t release demoted QB Leftwich

Although the Buccaneers demoted QB Byron Leftwich in favor of second-year pro Josh Johnson, the team won’t release the seven-year veteran, general manager Mark Dominik said.

Leftwich provides depth in case of an injury, and his experience remains highly valuable, on and off the field. He can give Johnson and rookie Josh Freeman answers in the meeting room and on the sideline since he has been there before, Dominik said. Leftwich has been very positive with Johnson and Freeman, and both players trust him, Dominik added.
