The Buccaneers defense took a hit on Tuesday when it was announced starting FS Jermaine Phillips had been placed on injured reserve. Phillips suffered a broken thumb in Week 2 against the Bills.
Bucs coach Raheem Morris announced Phillips’ injury on Monday, saying that the eighth-year pro was going to be evaluated by doctors. Phillips started both games this season and has been a regular starter for Tampa since his second season in 2002.
The Bucs released S Steve Cargile, leaving two open spots on the 53-man roster. The team’s official site notes that Will Allen and Sabby Piscitelli are currently the only remaining safeties on the roster. Piscitelli has started opposite Phillips the first two games of the season.
