Texans release O’Neal; Grossman makes team

Among the 22 players released by the Texans today was 10th-year veteran CB Deltha O’Neal — which is notable because Dunta Robinson continues to hold out after being made the team’s franchise player, depleting the depth in the secondary.
Sixth-year veteran Jacques Reeves is slated to start at right cornerback opposite Fred Bennett. If he’s healthy, Eugene Wilson is expected to start at free safety, with second-year pro Dominique Barber at strong safety.
Also notable in today’s announcement is who wasn’t cut — QB Rex Grossman. After throwing only one pass in the Texans’ first three preseason games, the former Bears QB returned from a hamstring injury Friday night and passed for 197 yards and two touchdowns.
Alex Brink was cut, meaning the Texans will enter the season with Grossman and Dan Orlovsky backing up starting QB Matt Schaub.
