Jesse Holley earned a Cowboys roster spot by winning Michael Irvin‘s reality TV competition, but he couldn’t hold it.
The wide receiver was among 22 players cut by the Cowboys, despite scoring the winning touchdown in Friday night’s preseason finale.
After scoring on a 82-yard punt return, Holley said this of the play: “When the ball dropped right to me, I thought, ‘What the heck do I have to lose?’ If I fumbled it, what was the worst thing that was going to happen? They cut me. And if I kept it, what’s the greatest thing that was going to happen? They keep me. So I just grabbed it.”
Also released were rookie CBs DeAngelo Smith (fifth-round draft pick) and Mike Mickens (seventh-round draft pick), who were teammates at the University of Cincinnati. The Cowboys were searching for help in the secondary, but Smith and Mickens couldn’t crack the lineup.
The Cowboys are currently at 52 players on the roster, so Dallas has room to add one player to reach the 53-man limit.
