Lions WR Johnson battling jammed thumb

Don’t hit the panic button in Detroit, but it looks as though star WR Calvin Johnson is battling a jammed thumb that is keeping him out of practice.
Johnson, who reportedly did not practice Monday, is wearing what he described to the Associated Press as a precautionary cast on his right hand to protect his thumb. Coach Jim Schwartz said Monday X-rays showed there is no significant injury.
Schwartz pulled Johnson out of practice — or at least parts of practice — on Sunday, telling reporters he would rather err on the side of caution.
“It’s something he’s been battling a little bit,” Schwartz said. “He jammed his thumb and I sort of pulled him (out practice). He’s the sort of guy that we have to pull out of practice. He doesn’t want to stop, he always wants to finish. Sometimes it’s best to take his helmet away from him and say, ‘Hey look, let’s let this thing rest,’ or ‘Let’s take our time on it.’ Unless I hear something different, it’s just a jam. He wanted to continue, but we just took him out.”
For you fantasy football heads, it might be enough to drive you stark-raving mad. And it’s only August. Breathe. Inhale … exhale.
