Mason: McNair’s death led to retirement thoughts

Ravens WR Derrick Mason says the death of former teammate and friend Steve McNair was a major factor in his contemplating retirement.

“It impacted my decision on whether to continue to play or retire,” Mason said. “When something like that happens out of the blue, it makes you think about certain things where your life is headed and where your football career is headed.”

Mason, now back at Ravens camp, said heĀ  is 100 percent committed to football, but he wouldn’t commit to playing beyond this season. Mason is entering the final year of a four-year, $20 million deal.
