The Patriots were impressed enough with the workout by quarterback Cleo Lemon on Friday to issue a contract offer, according to a league source, with the sides working on a deal. Lemon, who has spent five years in the NFL, with stints in San Diego, Miami and Jacksonville.
Second-year pro Kevin O’Connell, a third-round pick, had been in line to be the backup to Tom Brady following the trade of Matt Cassel to Kansas City, but Lemon would provide a veteran presence to offer competition for that spot as well. Lemon has made eight career starts and thrown eight touchdowns with seven interceptions. His athleticism could provide for wrinkles in New England’s offense, should the sides be able to work out a deal.
