Around the League

Invariably, there are a few things that I can’t get to, or forget to mention during NFL Total Access, or just a few things to follow up on. So I’ll put some of it out here, in no particular order.
- One thing to consider in the Derrick Mason retirement story — under the CBA, the Ravens could ask for him to return the final proration payment of his signing bonus, which would be $1.4 million. It’s not something the organization has done in the past, and it’s not common around the league, but it is worth noting. Compound that to all the salary Mason would be walking away from, and that’s a significant financial hit. The timing of Mason’s announcement, so late in the offseason, makes it difficult for the team to react, so that’s not the norm, either. Regardless, my gut tells me he’s coming back sometime next month.
- A lot of rookies will agree to terms this week, especially in the second and third round. Some that are close include Everette Brown (Carolina), DeAndre Levy (Detroit), Matt Shaughnessy (Oakland) and Richard Quinn (Denver).
- Looks like we will be talking some Cleveland Browns on the show tonight, and touching on some rookie running backs to watch as well.
