Jets’ Ryan fires back in war of words with Crowder

Who said the NFL “offseason” was dull? Thanks to Jets coach Rex Ryan and Dolphins LB Channing Crowder, there has been plenty of bulletin-board material — even as we roll along during June organized team activities and minicamps — to keep bloggers occupied.

In the latest of the back and forth between Ryan and Crowder, the first-year Jets coach began his Wednesday press conference with another volley in what’s quickly becoming the most entertaining series of trash-talking in recent memory.

“I love it,” Ryan offered, with a smile. “The only thing I can say is, and let’s see if he can top this one, I’ve walked over tougher guys going to a fight than Channing Crowder.

“That’s funny. The dude is going to kill me,” Ryan continued. “It will be good. We’ll make that trade.”

Ryan was responding to the latest from Crowder, who clearly wasn’t too thrilled with the coach’s unsolicited remarks Tuesday, when Ryan said he didn’t even know who Crowder was. Crowder told the Miami Herald late Tuesday night that, among other things, he would have “beat the hell out of that big old joker” in a fight against a younger version of Ryan.

It seems a long ways off until the Jets and Dolphins meet in a Monday night game in Week 5, but this is great stuff nonetheless.
