It might as well be official. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has yet to step to the podium and announce Matthew Stafford as the No.1 overall pick in today’s draft, yet the Lions already are selling Stafford jerseys through their Web site and nflshop.com.
For $79.99, you can be the proud owner of a Honolulu blue Lions jersey with Stafford’s name emblazoned on the back. The team is advertising the jersey with a No. 9 on the back (Stafford wore No. 7 at Georgia), though the purchase comes with this disclaimer: The player’s number is subject to change and the jersey will not ship until Matthew Stafford signs and an official number is issued. For what it’s worth, nobody on the Lions’ current roster is assigned Nos. 7 or 9.
On Saturday, the Lions announced that Stafford formally signed his six-year contract that includes $41.7 million guaranteed and could be worth up to $78 million.
