Draft day stirs memories for QB Rivers

SAN DIEGO — QB Philip Rivers stopped by the Chargers’ weight room at around 11:30 a.m. PT, but not to work out. The quarterback was interested in finding out what’s going on here on draft day. He, like everyone else, seems to be wondering which direction GM A.J. Smith will be going when the Chargers make the 16th pick.
Rivers found himself thinking about the draft five years ago, when he was part of the blockbuster trade that sent Eli Manning to the Giants and Rivers to the Chargers. Rivers never even spoke to the Giants until he was drafted by them
He knows as well as anyone that anything can happen on this day, and that’s why Rivers will be watching the draft from his home. He says he will be glued to the TV for the first five picks or so. After that he’ll leave the TV on in the background and tune in again when the Chargers pick at No. 16 — if they haven’t traded down. Rivers says it’s nice to be in a position as a team where you aren’t desperate to find a specific player or position in the draft.
