Rosenfels, Rice play numbers game in Minnesota

QB Sage Rosenfels has been in the NFL for eight seasons, WR Sidney Rice just two. But none of that matters when it comes to bargaining for jersey numbers.

Rosenfels, who was traded to the Minnesota Vikings this offseason, wants to wear No. 18. The problem is Rice has the number and isn’t going to give it up cheaply, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports:

“I’m not quite sure what’s going to happen yet,” Rice writes. “We’re supposed to go out to dinner and talk about it but that hasn’t happened yet. Every time I see him though he asks me how I like the number, so I know he wants it pretty bad.”
Safe to say, Rosenfels will be paying for the upcoming dinner whenever it happens and also might be sending a bit of cash Rice’s way for the rights to that No. 18 — that is if Rice will give it up.

Rosenfels notes that 18 is “an awful number” for a wide receiver like Rice. Wide receivers typically wear jersey numbers in the 80s, and one quick look at the Vikings’ current roster reveals that 80, 85, 86, 88 and 89 are all available. Sounds like a deal can be worked out, if Rice is willing to switch numbers.
