Agent: Cutler never refused to play for Browns’ Mangini

We might never know how close teams such as the Redskins and Browns were to landing QB Jay Cutler. But the assertion that Cutler, whose clash with new Broncos coach Josh McDaniels led to a trade to the Bears, refused to play for Browns coach Eric Mangini — another Bill Belichick disciple — is false, Cutler’s agent told the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
- “That’s not true,” agent Bus Cook said Monday. “Jay doesn’t even know Eric Mangini except for maybe when they met when he was coming out of Vanderbilt.”
Last week, Cutler was traded to the Bears, along with a fifth-round draft pick, for QB Kyle Orton and a bevy of draft picks, including first- and third rounders this year and a first-rounder next year. The Browns have two solid quarterbacks — Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn — but had been rumored to be involved in the Cutler talks anyway.
