Aside from netting three draft picks in the deal with the Bears for QB Jay Cutler, the Broncos may have also gotten a starting quarterback at a relative bargain price. According to the Denver Post, Kyle Orton‘s 2009 total compensation will be $1.095 million, compared to the $3.46 million for projected backup Chris Simms.
While Orton will have to prove worthy of the job in the offseason, he’s ready to compete for the starting job.
“The only thing I’ve ever asked for in my entire career is a chance to compete,” Orton told the newspaper. “I don’t want anything given to me. Chris is a good football player, and hopefully we’ll have a great quarterback unit.”
