New Cleveland Browns coach Eric Mangini will hold an open competition between Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn for the team’s starting quarterback job. Mangini made the announcement at Tuesday’s AFC Coaches Breakfast at the NFL Annual Meeting in Dana Point, Calif., the Akron Beacon Journal reported:
- “I don’t have a projected starter,” Mangini said. “We’re going to have an open competition.”
Mangini gave no timetable to select his starting quarterback, saying that he would give both quarterbacks equal repetitions in training camp and make his decision when the time was right. Mangini also failed to mention if he would use the coin flip like Romeo Crennel.
