DANA POINT, Calif. — Some observations from an early morning workout at the fitness center of the St. Regis Hotel, site of the NFL annual owners meeting:
- The center opens at 6 a.m. PST. By 6:02, every piece of equipment is taken. What do you expect from a congregation of people from the world of professional sports and whose body clocks are set at as many as three hours ahead of local time?
- Commissioner Roger Goodell is tearing it up on the elliptical machine, which has a TV on it tuned to ESPN. I end up on the elliptical next to his. I am NOT tearing it up, but I am moving, which is pretty good for most football writers I know.
- Falcons owner Arthur Blank is pedaling away on a stationary bike. Dan Rooney, the Steelers’ 76-year-old owner, is holding his own on a treadmill. Vikings coach Brad Childress and Rams general manager Billy Devaney are going to town on the weights.
Who said this was just a gathering of a bunch of talking suits?
