When pranks go wrong

Broncos QB Jay Cutler was welcomed to the Pro Bowl this week in much the same manner that many first-timers are — by being thrown into a pool. Prank organizer Peyton Manning was even thoughtful enough to have Cutler’s cell phone removed beforehand. But, according to the Denver Post, the Ashton Kutcher wannabes forgot one small detail.

Harrison, Steelers talk about new contract

Steelers LB James Harrison made arguably the biggest play in Super Bowl XLIII to follow up winning the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award. Now comes the contract renegotiation. Harrison has one year left on his current deal, but his agent, Bill Parise, told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that he already has held discussions with the team. Parise said he’s hoping for $100 million for his client, though he said that with a laugh.

Manning brothers face similar challenges in 2009

Just spoke with the Manning boys, and it’s so refreshing to see the pride Peyton has in little brother Eli. It’s also interesting to see the similarities in their situations. Both players have lost their defensive coordinators in Ron Meeks for the Colts and Steve Spagnuolo for the Giants. Peyton, of course, also has lost a future Hall of Famer in coach Tony Dungy.

Woodson could play more safety next season

The Packers had their challenges at the safety position in 2008 because of injuries. Pro Bowl pick Nick Collins is locked in at one corner position, and the Packers hope Atari Bigby can return to his 2007 pre-injury form. If not, coach Mike McCarthy told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that he would consider using Charles Woodson at safety.

Agent downplays Warner’s retirement talk

Cardinals QB Kurt Warner has hinted at retirement during the season and has now said that he will take some time to make a decision about his playing future. Warner’s agent, Mark Bartelstein, told the East Valley Tribune that fans shouldn’t pay too much attention to his client’s talk of retirement.

Stat change gives Dockett share of Super Bowl record

The Cardinals announced a statistical change Thursday, giving defensive tackle Darnell Dockett a share of a Super Bowl record.

Gonzalez, Lewis face uncertain futures

Chiefs TE Tony Gonzalez and Ravens LB Ray Lewis are donning their familiar AFC Pro Bowl uniforms for the 10th time in their careers. Now the question is, will Gonzalez and Lewis play in their other familiar uniforms in 2009.

Cowboys: Reeves won’t join organization

It appeared — and was reported — that former NFL head coach Dan Reeves would join the Dallas Cowboys in some manner. That momentum was halted Wednesday, when the team announced the two sides were unable to reach an agreement on a contract.

NFL hopes to create bidding war for charity

Down the hall from the NFC locker room at the players’ hotel, the NFL auction headquarters would have a beautiful view — if it weren’t for the boxes stacked to the ceiling.

Vikings’ Peterson is fans’ MVP

The NFC all-stars got back to work Wednesday, practicing at Kapolei High School, on another cool (OK, relatively cool — this is Hawaii) morning.

L.J. no longer elite in fantasy circles

Larry Johnson again expressed his desire Wednesday to part ways and have a “clean break” with the Chiefs. A move away from the team that drafted him would have major fantasy-football implications.

Johnson wants out: Kansas City ‘not a fit for me’

Chiefs RB Larry Johnson cleared the air on a number of topics in a wide-ranging interview Wednesday, reiterating that he wants to play elsewhere next season.

Titans, Haynesworth aren’t close to a deal

The Nashville City Paper is reporting that the Titans and DT Albert Haynesworth are still far apart on a new contract. The Titans reportedly have made an initial contract offer to Haynesworth, but there’s still some work to do. Haynesworth was tagged as a franchise player last season and met incentives worked into the deal in order to reach free agency this year.

Lewis has plenty of options for ‘an old guy’

Today, I had an opportunity to talk to Ray Lewis, All-Pro linebacker and all-planet leader. In my mind, Lewis finds himself in an unprecedented position for a player over the age of 30.

Warner will play for Cardinals if he returns

Kurt Warner‘s future will be debated in the coming weeks. Will he retire? Will he return? The only sure answer is that if the QB returns to the NFL, he will return to the Cardinals, according to the Arizona Republic.
