Crabtree doesn’t quite measure up

Texas Tech wideout Michael Crabtree, who was listed by his school at 6-foot-3, measured nearly 2 inches below that at 6-1 3/8. That, by far, was the biggest differential in height of those measured over the last two days at the combine.

Eagles re-sign CB Hanson

The Eagles resigned their nickel cornerback Joselio Hanson to a five-year, $21 million contract that included $6.4 million of guaranteed money. Some teams viewed Hanson as a starting cornerback and, had he opted to wait, he very well might have landed a starting job. But Hanson opted to return to Philadelphia, where the Eagles are loaded with defensive backs.

Raiders release Wilson, Curry and Edwards

The Sacramento Bee is reporting that the Raiders have released safety Gibril Wilson, defensive end Kalimba Edwards and receiver Ronald Curry. The Raiders signed Wilson last season and he joins DeAngelo Hall as another high-priced defensive back who signed with Oakland last year but will not be on the roster in 2009.

Day 2 recap from Indianapolis

Here’s a look at what we learned in Day 2 of the 2009 NFL Scouting Combine, as well as some general observations from our live bloggers in Indy.

Warner will return to the NFL in 2009

While speculation swirled after Super Bowl XLIII about whether Arizona quarterback Kurt Warner would play or retire, the Cardinals had little doubt.

Premier prospects all over the media room

With Friday being the day quarterbacks, receivers and running backs played “Meet the Press,” there was quite a bit of activity in the media room.

Childress welcomes open QB competition

The situation in Minnesota revolving around just who will be the starting quarterback is an ongoing thing. We might not be any closer to knowing what this answer will be next August, but Vikings head coach Brad Childress did offer some insight into the situation when he met with the media on Friday.

Offensive linemen off to a quick start

I’ve been doing this combine thing for a long time now, and today I saw a first. In the halls of the Indiana Convention Center, where prospects get poked, prodded and interviewed behind closed doors, were several offensive linemen running 40-yard dashes and practicing their starts. Someone had even put tape down on the carpeted floors for this impromptu track meet.

A pair of prospects seeking the spotlight

One prospect is aiming to increase his visibility, another is looking to re-establish his, but both are using the platform of the combine to accomplish those goals.

Ryan won’t talk about Lewis, other potential free agents

Over and over, the New York Jets and their new head coach, Rex Ryan, are linked to free-agent-to-be linebacker Ray Lewis. So when Ryan conducted a press conference Friday at the scouting combine in Indianapolis, needless to say one of the very first topics he was questioned about was what Lewis would add to the Jets’ defense.

Still some available tackles on free-agent market

Usually teams take hits in free agency. But at this time of year, positions do. Right now, two of the most attractive tackles have been taken off the market, but there is still some value at the position.

Rams’ Spagnuolo has confidence in QB Bulger

St. Louis’ Steve Spagnuolo didn’t offer much news on the Rams’ roster or free agency plans Friday as one of the six first-year coaches addressing the media.

Texans GM Smith responds to Robinson

The Houston Texans made one of their biggest decisions of the offseason on Thursday by placing the franchise tag on CB Dunta Robinson.

Versatility is the buzzword of the week

Prospects who can play multiple positions and fill a variety of roles have always carried extra value in the draft, but those qualities are becoming even more important as the game evolves.

Agent: Warner will play next season

The agent for quarterback Kurt Warner told the Chicago Sun-Times that his client has decided that he will play in the NFL next season. Warner had said that he was going to take some time after the season to contemplate his return to the NFL.
